Women's Volleyball Wins Two on Senior Day

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 27, 2018 – The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team won both of its matches at Saturday's home Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match on the final day of the regular season. The Chargers edged Norwich 3-2 by scores of 21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12 and swept Anna Maria 3-0 by scores of 25-12, 25-16, 25-20.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 20-10 overall and locks up the third spot in the GNAC standings with a 10-2 record. The Chargers will host a GNAC Tournament quarterfinal match on Tuesday evening. Colby-Sawyer reached at least 20 wins for the first time since 2014.

Norwich split its matches today to go to 11-14 overall and 3-9 in the GNAC.

Anna Maria ends its season at 4-25 overall and 0-12 in conference play.

Prior to the day's final match, Colby-Sawyer honored its two seniors Courtney Murray (Quincy, Mass.) and Nicole Olivieri (Salem, N.H.).

COLBY-SAWYER 3, NORWICH 2 – 21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12

The Cadets led 10-7 after a kill by junior Marissa Perrotti (Moultonborough, N.H.), but the Chargers battled back with five-straight points capped by a Maddie Bromley (Truckee, Calif.) ace to take a 12-10 lead. Perrotti then stepped to the service and recorded three aces during a 7-0 run to rally her team to a 17-12 advantage. Colby-Sawyer came back again to tie the score at 17-17, but Norwich went on for the 25-21 win after a set-clinching kill by sophomore Kathryn Farnum (North Andover, Mass.).  

The second set was back and forth with several ties and lead changes. With the set tied at 19-19, the Chargers connected on three kills and benefited from three Norwich attack errors to take the set 25-20 and tie the match 1-1.

Colby-Sawyer raced out to a 7-1 lead in the third set, which included three kills by Bromley. Trailing 22-15, Norwich erased a big deficit to pull within two at 23-21 and force a Chargers timeout. Colby-Sawyer senior Courtney Murray (Quincy, Mass.) had a kill and then combined with junior Olivia Goodrich (Epping, N.H.) for a block to end the set 25-21.

Norwich tied the match with a gritty 25-23 victory in the fourth set. The set was tightly contested throughout and was tied at 22-22. The Cadets were able to secure the win with kills from Farnum, senior Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) and junior Michele Zummo (Highliand Mills, N.Y.).

The Chargers began the fifth set on a 7-2 run capped by a Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.) kill. Norwich rallied with four consecutive points on four Colby-Sawyer errors to force a timeout. A kill by Addison Hall (Apple Valley, Calif.) tied the set at 7-7, but Colby-Sawyer received kills from Murray, Bromley and Sam Mohammed (Killingworth, Conn.) to give the home team a 10-7 advantage. The Chargers were able to hang on to the lead and win the set and the match on a Bromley kill.

Colby-Sawyer's Maddie Bromley led all players with a season-high tying 20 kills. She added 17 digs and five aces. Sam Mohammed was second on the team with 13 kills, while Naarah Cox contributed 11 kills on .333 hitting. Junior Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) posted a match best 25 digs and first-year Anna Allen (Los Angeles, Calif.) tied a season best with 48 assists.

Michele Zummo and sophomore Julia Schroeder (Victorville, Calif.) led Norwich with 12 kills apiece. Kathryn Farnum also finished with double digit kills with 11. Emily Oliver registered 38 assists and five kills.

COLBY-SAWYER 3, ANNA MARIA 0 – 25-12, 25-16, 25-20

Courtney Murray led 12 Chargers that recorded at least a kill with eight on .500 hitting. Nicole Olivieri added five kills and four digs. First-year Maddie Conroy (Middlebury, Conn.) chipped in with five kills. Sophomore Ellie Dupre (Sturbridge, Mass.) contributed 11 assists and five digs. Junior Rebecca Straubel (Altamont, N.Y.) registered seven digs, six aces and four kills.

Anna Maria was led by first-year Chloe Vella (Leominster, Mass.). First-year Julia Ramos (Orange, Mass.) posted 16 aces. Senior Victoria Falco (Marlborough, Mass.) led all players with 11 digs.

NORWICH 3, ANNA MARIA 0 – 25-13, 25-6, 25-10

Norwich's Kathryn Farnum hit .611 to finish with 12 kills. She added four aces and five digs. Emily Oliver tallied 19 assists and an impressive seven aces.

Anna Maria junior Hannah Mitchell (Pittsfield, Mass.) had a team best three kills. Victoria Falco led all players with 10 digs. Julia Ramos posted four aces.
