Women's Soccer Gels To Beat Lasell 2-1 In Springfield Invite

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, MA (September 4, 2011) -- The Vassar College women's soccer team rebounded with a 2-1 win over Lasell College in the consolation round of the Springfield Invitational on Sunday evening at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex.

Vassar knocked down the game-winner in the 81st minute on a composed strike by freshman Kelsey Domb. After a long through ball by sophomore Kylie Ladenberger, Domb made two touches to outpace the last two defenders and calmly slotted home a shot from 10 yards out, past the sprawling Lasell keeper Elizabeth Stickley.

“With a young team, a coach looks for a certain game to define how the team should play,” said head coach Richard Moller. “For us, this was that game. We showed character to play three games in four games and came together technically and tactically.”

The Brewers (2-1) return to action on the road against Western Connecticut State on Wednesday, September 7, at 7:00 p.m.

Vassar dominated play, owning an 18-6 edge in shots, including a 9-2 advantage in the first half.

In the 58th minute, the Lasers evened the score at 1-1. After a terrific inside feed from sophomore forward Jamie Harris into the box, freshman forward Bridget Lynch broke free with a one-on-one with the Vassar keeper Higgins. Lynch pushed the ball past Higgins over the goal line.

Vassar struck first with a goal in the 33rd minute of the first half. Senior defender Alex Grant put the Brewers up 1-0 after she directed a header into the back of the net on a corner kick by freshman Sarah Bourenane.

Lasell had a chance to tie it with just under four minutes remaining, but Higgins denied defender Jamie Osterberg's bid from 12 yards out.

Between the pipes, Higgins made four saves to earn the win for Vassar. Her counterpart, Stickley, made a total of nine saves.
