Men's Basketball Defeats Mount Ida, 84-80

WESTFIELD, Mass. – November 19, 2016 - Sophomore guard Jourdain Bell (Manchester, N.H.) scored a game and career-high 29 points to lead the Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team to an 84-80 win over Mount Ida College in the consolation game of the Rick Martin – Holiday Inn Express Tip Off Tournament at Westfield State University's Woodward Center on Saturday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 1-2 and will have a lengthy lay-off before hosting Plymouth State on Monday, November 28. Mount Ida dips to 0-3.

Two games after Bell poured in a career best 23 points against Norwich earlier this week, the sophomore shot 7-of-16 from the floor but was perfect at the free throw line making all 11 attempts. He added five steals and five assists. Junior Taylor Grande (Bedford, N.H.) added 12 points on 4-5 shooting from three point range, and sophomore Nate Cook (Burlington, Conn.) added 10 points. Freshman Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) finished with a game-high 11 rebounds and has double digit boards in all three games this season.

Colby-Sawyer built a 50-32 halftime lead and extended that lead to 20 on a Bell steal and dunk just 1:45 into the second half, but then Mount Ida used a 21-4 run over the next seven minutes to pull within three points, at 56-53, on a Brendan Cunningham (Quincy, Mass.) jumper with 11:34 left in the half.

Colby-Sawyer extended the lead back to 10 points, 66-56 on a Matt Maynard (Shelburne, Vt.) layup with 8:15 to play, but Mount Ida turned up the defensive pressure as the half wore on to chisel the lead all the way down to one point, 72-71, with 3:34 left in the game on a layup by Jason Clark (Austin, Texas).

The Chargers boosted the lead back to seven, 81-74, on a traditional three-point play by Dana Bean with 30 seconds left in regulation time, but again the Mustangs sawed the lead back down, pulling to within two points at 82-80 on a Joey DeFillippi (Bristol, Conn.) trey with four seconds left.

Bell sealed the deal for Colby-Sawyer with a pair of late free throws.

Mount Ida was led by Ethan Dujon's (Warwick, RI) 19 points, while Clark added 16 points, five assists and nine steals. Cunningham tallied 13 points with five rebounds.

The Chargers finished with the second best free throw percentage in a game (minimum 20 FTA) in program history after making 23 of 25 attempts for 92%.
