Women's Soccer Edged by Lasell, 2-1

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 14, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's soccer team was edged by Lasell College, 2-1 in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

Lasell improves to 1-2-1 and will resume Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. game at Emmanuel. Colby-Sawyer drops to 1-3 will play a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opener at Husson on Saturday at 1 p.m.

In a matchup of recent conference champions, Colby-Sawyer winning the past three NAC titles and Lasell winning the past six GNAC crowns, each side had multiple chances to go in front in the first half but the game went to the break tied 0-0.

The Lasers finally broke through in the 65th minute when they were awarded a free kick. With the wind at her back, senior Devon Day (Hartland, Vt.) sent a curling ball towards goal that got by the outreached Colby-Sawyer keeper to put the visitors on top 1-0.

Seven minutes later, Day was involved in another scoring play for Lasell. Day was running down the left flank and crossed a ball into the box. Freshman Caitlin Rotonnelli (Meredith, N.H.) was waiting and headed the ball into the back of the net for her first collegiate tally.

Colby-Sawyer cut the deficit in half with less than four minutes to play, but the game ended in favor of Lasell. With both teams trying to possess the ball at midfield, freshman Molly MacLure (Westford, Mass.) was able to get a knee on the ball and hit it into the offensive end to senior Lizzie Jorgensen (Manchester, Vt.). Jorgensen then dribbled the ball for 30 yards and beat the keeper to the left corner for her first goal of the season.

Lasell goalie Sarah LaClair (Belchertown, Mass.) had two stops in the win. Chargers keeper Sam Mitchell (Chester, N.H.) kept the game close with 13 saves.
