Fiery Pirates take home opener

Fiery Pirates take home opener

Southwestern scored four first quarter goals and continued to pile on the offense, defeating Johnson & Wales University 10-5 on Tuesday night.

After JWU got the opening goal two and a half minutes in, it was all Southwestern as the Pirate offense could not be stopped. Jake Ham, Connor Koper, Jackson Timian and Parker Rankin all scored in the first quarter.

Timian added his second goal of the game to kick off the second quarter before Johnson & Wales posted their second goal. Koper, assisted by Dakota Butler, hit an acrobatic goal to send the Pirates into the locker room up four, 6-2.

Southwestern came out of halftime blazing as Jake Ham scored unassisted just over  a minute into the third quarter. It wasn't until the 4:21 mark that SU scored again as Matthew Montagne found Matt Amerie to put Southwestern up 8-2. The Wildcats scored back to back goals to pull within four, but Dakota Butler, assisted by Timian, widened the gap with a goal with nine seconds remaining in the third.

Each team scored one early in the fourth quarter and then Southwestern's defense took over and locked down JWU to seal the win.

Timian led the way with two goals and two assists while Ham posted three goals. Charlie Fisher earned the win, logging seven saves on 12 shots in 60 minutes and had a team high four ground balls.

Southwestern led 36-22 in shots and 26-16 in turnovers but trailed 40-32 in ground balls.

Now, 4-3 on the season, Southwestern remains at home to face Wheaton on Monday, March 9th at 7 pm.
