Softball Wins Two

The Muhlenberg softball team put on its hitting shoes on its third day of games in Florida, scoring 22 runs in defeating DeSales (13-5) and Simmons (9-2) to extend its winning streak to three.

Junior Kristina Qualben drove in five runs in the sweep, while seniors Hanna Caiola and Amelia Shelley recorded a pair of hits in both games. Senior Haley Fedak had three hits, scored four runs and pitched a complete game for her second straight win.

The Mules (3-3) broke open a tight game against DeSales by plating 10 runs in their final two at-bats. After back-to-back singles by Shelley and junior Kristy Selby in the bottom of the fifth, Muhlenberg took advantage of three Bulldog errors to score four runs and open up a 7-3 lead.

DeSales got two of the runs back in the top of the sixth, but the Mules ended the game in the bottom of the inning with six runs. Qualben (pictured above) provided the biggest hit, blasting her 10th career home run, a three-run shot over the fence in center.

Following the round-tripper, three straight walks - of the 10 free passes Muhlenberg received in the game - loaded the bases. Fedak singled in a run to make it 12-5, and a bases-loaded walk to senior Karissa Astrella gave the Mules the win by the eight-run rule.

Freshman Sophie Chong, who started the game in the circle, came back in relief in the sixth inning and retired two of the three batters she faced to earn her first career save.

The Mules scored in all but two innings against Simmons to back the four-hit pitching of Fedak, who struck out four and did not allow an earned run.

Fedak scored on throwing errors by the catcher in the first and third innings, and Qualben singled and scored in the second. Ahead 3-1 after four, Muhlenberg scored five runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Astrella and Shelley, a run-scoring double by Selby and a two-run double off the bat of Qualben.

Freshman Ariana Feliziani stole three bases in the two games.
