Women's Volleyball Splits GNAC Tri-Match

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 8, 2018 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team began the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) portion of the schedule by hosting a tri-match on Saturday that featured #6 Johnson & Wales and Saint Joseph (CT).

Colby-Sawyer split its matches with a 3-0 loss to Johnson & Wales and a 3-0 victory over Saint Joseph (CT). The Chargers play at Keene on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Johnson & Wales earned a pair of sweeps over Colby-Sawyer and Saint Joseph (CT). The Wildcats will step out of conference action to host Endicott on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.

Saint Joseph dropped both of its matches on the day by a 3-0 score. The Blue Jays will travel to Dean on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.

#6 JOHNSON & WALES 3, COLBY-SAWYER 0 – 25-16, 25-15, 25-16

Johnson & Wales hit .533 in the first set with 17 kills and just one error and never looked back. The efficient offense carried the Wildcats to win by scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-16.

Senior Katie Leidhold (Acushnet, Mass.) led 12 Johnson & Wale players who recorded at least one kill. She finished with eight kills on .500 hitting and eight digs. The reigning AVCA National Player of the Week junior setter Brylee Frank (Palm City, Fla.) registered 37 assists, five digs and a match-high three aces.

Colby-Sawyer was led by first-year Maddie Bromley (Truckee, Calif.). She tallied nine kills and five digs. Senior Courtney Murray (Quincy, Mass.) added eight kills. First-year Charlotte Frivoll (Essex Junction, Vt.) contributed a match best 17 digs.

#6 JOHNSON & WALES 3, SAINT JOSEPH (CT) 0 – 25-11, 25-16, 25-14

The Wildcats earned the two-match sweep on Saturday by defeating Saint Joseph (CT) 25-11, 25-16 and 25-14. Johnson & Wales got off to another hot start by hitting .455 in the first set with 11 kills and one error. Trailing 12-10 in the third set, the Wildcats turned up the intensity and finished with a 15-2 run to close the match.

Johnson & Wales was led by a 7-kill effort from sophomore Bella Oldham (Irvine, Calif.). Frank added 27 assists and three aces. First-year Elisabeth Elbrecht (Owings, Md.) chipped in six kills and three block assists.

The Blue Jays received a match best nine kills from sophomore Aminah Tsonga (Plainville, Conn.). She added 11 digs. Senior Janell Molina (Honolulu, Hawaii) collected a match-high 15 digs. Senior setter Brenna Miller (McCleary, Wash.) had 18 assists.

COLBY-SAWYER 3, SAINT JOSEPH (CT) 0 – 25-12, 25-13, 25-15

Courtney Murray continued her impressive day with 13 kills on .545 hitting to lift the Chargers to the 3-0 sweep. First-year Maddie Conroy (Middlebury, Conn.) added seven kills on .333 hitting, while junior setter Olivia Goodrich (Epping, N.H.) tallied 26 assists. Frivoll posted a match-high 17 digs.

Saint Joseph (CT) was led by senior Torrie Epps (Windsor, Conn.). She had four kills, one block and two block assists. Molina registered 14 digs, while Miller finished with 10 digs and seven assists.
