Softball Improves to 6-5 With Sweep on Final Day

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Hawks softball team continued to shine this morning when they opened the day with a 7-1 victory against Regis College and then swept Chatham College, 3-1, for the second time in less than 24 hours.

Earlier in the week, the Pride took a 3-1 win after posting a pair of runs late in the game.  Today, Hilbert turned the corner and notched runs in four of the six innings they were at bat.

Hilbert controlled the pace of the second game against Chatham.  The Hawks manufactured runs in the middle innings and made plays in the field that limited the Cougars to just one run.

An unofficial observation believes the 2018 Hawks become the first team to return from spring break with a winning record - 6-5.

GAME ONE

After each team scored a solo run in the first inning, the Hawks held the Pride scoreless the rest of the way.  Hilbert scored multiple runs in the 4th and 6th innings.

Maia Delaney, Melanie Basile and Morgan McNeill each poked doubles in the game. McNeill (2-for-3) knocked in three runs and Hannah Prenoveau scored a pair.

Marisa McIntyre moved to 2-2 on the season in the circle with another complete game under her belt.  She struck three out, walked one and gave up one run in the win.

McNeill's single in the 1st inning pushed Basile home for Hilbert's first run.  The Hawks posted three consecutive singles to the outfield at the bottom of the fourth, which set up two more runs lifting Hilbert to a 3-1 lead.

Castricone's fielder choice hit scored Prenoveau in the 5th, and Prenoveau's hit in the 6th started the three-run inning.  Barnas scored before McNeill's double pushed Prenoveau and Delaney home.

GAME TWO

Hannah Prenoveau and Nateal Papasergi tapped triples to the right field which set up all three Hilbert runs.  Prenoveau scored Delaney in the 3rd and Papasergi knocked in Gabriella Bongiorno and Castricone in the 4th.

Angelia Johnson went 2-for-3.

Rachel Allen limited Chatham to five hits with five strike outs while the defense in the field picked up 11 fly outs and four ground outs to preserve the win.

The Hawks board their bus back to Buffalo but must wait 14 days before they play their next game on March 23 at Elmira College.
