Women's Tennis Serves Johnson & Wales First Loss, 8-1

Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 16, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team improved its win streak to six matches after an 8-1 victory over Johnson & Wales on Saturday afternoon at the Kelsey Tennis Courts.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 6-0 and will resume North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. home match against Green Mountain. Johnson & Wales suffers its first loss to fall to 4-1. The Wildcats will travel to Albertus Magnus on Wednesday for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener. Colby-Sawyer and JWU will meet again next year as the Chargers will be joining the GNAC in 2018-19. 

JWU becomes the second team the Chargers have defeated this season that made the NCAA Tournament last year. The Wildcats were selected as the GNAC preseason favorites after winning the league last season. Nichols also made the NCAA Tournament last season as winners of the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Chargers beat the Bison 5-4 on September 2.

Senior Ashley Woodside (Hampden, Maine) and freshman Yashu Yang (Kunming City, China) gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead with a convincing 8-1 victory over sophomore Nina Cohen (Guatemala, City, Guatemala) and junior Delaney Macchirole (Greenport, N.Y.) at the top doubles spot. The No. 3 duo of senior Lauren Blanchard (Agawam, Mass.) and junior Maddy Gemerek (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) combined for an 8-2 win over junior Victoria Pizzulo (Lafayette, N.J.) and sophomore Ashley Hartford (Howell, Mich.) to put Colby-Sawyer in front 2-0. The Chargers made it a 3-0 doubles sweep behind an 8-6 victory by No. 2 tandem junior Aislinn O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn.) and senior Evelyn Miller (Smithfield, R.I.) who defeated sophomore Madison Hernandez (Phoenix, Ariz.) and sophomore Holly Olson (Mukwonago, Wis.).

The Wildcats got on the board by taking the No. 4 singles match behind strong play from Macchirole, 6-1, 6-1.

Colby-Sawyer would then win the remaining five matches to take an 8-1 victory.

O'Connor gave Colby-Sawyer a 4-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Hernandez at No. 5, while Woodside clinched the match at the top flight with an impressive 6-2, 6-0 win over two-time reigning GNAC Player of the Week Nina Cohen.

Blanchard collected the Chargers' sixth point with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Olson at the sixth flight and Yang cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over senior Taylor Klein (Johnson, N.Y.) at the second spot.  

The singles match of the day was at the third flight where Miller outlasted a gritty effort by junior Lauren Torre (New Fairfield, Conn.) 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
