Men's Basketball Stumbles at Johnson & Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - January 10, 2019 - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball suffered a 76-58 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss at Johnson & Wales on Thursday evening. 

Colby-Sawyer evens its record to 7-7 overall and 1-1 in the GNAC. The Chargers will conclude a busy week with a 2 p.m. tip at Anna Maria on Saturday. Johnson & Wales improves to 7-8 overall and 2-0 in conference action. The Wildcats will play at Suffolk on Saturday. 

Senior Jourdain Bell (Manchester, N.H.) led Colby-Sawyer with 15 points. He moved up two spots on the all-time scoring list and is now 13th with 1303 points. Sophomore KJ Synvrit (Miami, Fla.) was 6-of-9 for 13 points. Junior Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) notched his third-straight double-double and sixth overall with 11 points and 11 rebounds. He moved into 9th in career rebounds with 579 and sits at 995 career points. 

Brian Hogan-Gary led all players with 26 points and 18 rebounds. Donovian Maxfield was 8-of-11, including 7-of-10 from beyond the arc, to finish with 23 points. Randall Ferdinand contributed 11 points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats. 

JWU jumped out to a 9-0 lead, but Colby-Sawyer responded with nine points of their own capped by a Nick Backer (Tamarac, Fla.) trey. With 5:33 left, the home team took a 10-point lead, 29-19, after a Maxfield three-pointer. The Chargers fought back to finish the half on a 13-1 run, which included seven points from Synvrit, to take a 32-30 lead at the half. 

Colby-Sawyer scored two buckets to begin the second half and later held a 3-point lead with 13:32 to play, but JWU then began its run to eventually take control of the contest. The Wildcats shot 57.1% from the floor, 5-of-9 from deep and made 9-of-12 free throws to pull away in the second half. Hogan-Gary scored 21 of his 26 points in the frame. 

Colby-Sawyer struggled shooting the ball at 33.8% from the floor and 4-of-24 from beyond the arc. The 58 points was the team's lowest output of the season.
