Emmanuel Defeats Women's Basketball

Sophomore guard Hanna Fedorka (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) scored 5 points as Ohio Wesleyan built an early 11-6 lead, but Emmanuel took the lead with a 19-4 burst and went to to a win in the championship game of the EC Invitational, hosted by Emmanuel College on Sunday in Boston.

Junior guard Sarah McQuade (Dublin/Coffman) opened the day's scoring with a 3-pointer and junior post Kristin Henning (Beavercreek) followed with a free throw before a McQuade lay-in and a Fedorka 3-pointer gave the Bishops a 9-4 advantage.  Fedorka then answered Jennifer Bujnowski's jumper with a fast-break lay-in for an 11-6 Bishop lead.

The Saints reeled off the next 9 points, collecting 2 more Bujnowski baskets, a Liz Daley lay-in, and a bucket and a free throw from Jasmine Burwell for a 15-11 advantage.

Sophomore post Emily Julius (Avon) scored twice as the Bishops fought back to tie the game at 15, but Emmanuel scored the next 10 points on a Devin Rauh 3-point play, lay-ins by Bujnowski and Lena Negri, and a 3-pointer from Daley that made it 25-15 with 5:46 left in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan closed out the first half by cutting the deficit to 31-25 on a 3-pointer by junior wing Caroline Welker (Delaware/Hayes), but the Saints opened the second half with 8 straight points to restore the double-digit lead.

The Bishops had one more run, coming back to within 41-34 on a lay-in by junior post LaNiece McRae (Youngstown/Chaney) with 12:22 left, but Emmanuel countered with a 10-1 run to slam the door.

McRae led the Bishops with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Fedorka had a team-high 2 assists.

Bujnowski led Emmanuel with 14 points, while Negri finished with 10 points.

Julius and McQuade represented Ohio Wesleyan on the all-tournament team.
