Chargers Walk Off with 5-4 Win over Saint Michael's

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 16, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to comeback for a 5-4 victory over Saint Michael's of the Northeast-10 Conference in Division II.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 6-19. The Chargers will host Albertus Magnus for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader on Thursday at 2 p.m. Saint Michael's falls to 6-19. The Purple Knights travel to Saint Anselm tomorrow for a 3:30 p.m. NE-10 matchup. Interim head coach of Saint Michael's is former Colby-Sawyer assistant coach Mat Pause.

The Chargers got on the board in their first at-bat when Brendan Barrett (Nashua, N.H.) had an RBI single to right field.

Saint Michael's plated a pair in the second when Harrison Stampler (Miami, Fla.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Later in the frame, Sebastian Oetterer (Orlando, Fla.) hit a sac fly to right to put the visitors on top 2-1.

After four scoreless innings, the Purple Knights added to their lead in the seventh with an RBI single off the bat of Dante Moran (Saint Petersburg, Fla.).

The Chargers got that run back in the bottom of the seventh. Austin Butler (Saunderstown, R.I.) tripled in Ryan Cummiskey (Billerica, Mass.) to pull Colby-Sawyer within one.

Colby-Sawyer was able to tie the score in the bottom of the eighth when Danny McCrystal (Londonderry, N.H.) singled to right field to bring around Kristian Viljanen (Morrisville, Vt.).

In the top of the ninth, Saint Michael's retook the lead with a run-scoring single from Julien Giroux-Harvey (Montreal, Quebec).

The bottom of the ninth began with a fly out to left field. Tim Unczur (Danvers, Mass.) walked and then advanced to second when Butler singled to third base. Barrett followed with a liner to left field that scored Unczur to tie the game at 4-4. Viljanen was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.

McCrystal then hit a grounder to short that was flipped to second for the force out and the relay to force was off line as Butler came around for the winning run.

Tim Unczur earned the win after an inning of relief. Jack Cahill (South Berwick, Maine) allowed one hit and struck out one in an inning of work. Kaelen Close (Greenfield, Mass.) struck out five and did not allow any runs on two hits in 4.2 innings out of the bullpen.

First-year Sean Birch (Mansfield, Mass.) pitched the first seven innings for the Purple Knights. He allowed two runs on seven hits. JP LaBarge (Dennis, Mass.) took the loss after 1.2 innings of relief work with three runs and four hits.

Barrett had a game-high three hits to lead Colby-Sawyer.

Moran, Stampler and Lenin Gomez (Edison, N.J.) had two hits apiece for the Purple Knights.
