Big hits leads CSB to two wins Friday in Florida

PLANT CITY, Fla. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team's bats were hot Friday as the team scored 19 runs on 28 hits en route to a 10-3 win over Simmons and a 9-3 win over Hood Friday afternoon in Plant City, Fla.

Eleven different players had a hit in the team's win over Simmons. The team had five hits and scored three runs in the second – highlighted by a two-run single from Kate Deming – and got five more hits and five more runs in the third. Sheridan Glashan, Olivia McCabe and Lizzie Walker all had RBI singles in the third. Jordyn Swoboda and Emily Schmitz both sent in runs in the fifth to end the scoring for CSB. Simmons (2-7) scored a single run in the second, third and fifth innings.

Deming finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead CSB. McCabe went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and Kendra Swanson had two hits for CSB, which finished with 16 hits. Alex Smith earned the win after giving up just two runs on five hits with five strikeouts in four innings of work, and Lauren York gave up four hits and struck out three in the final three innings.

In the second game of the day, a big hit from Deming helped lift the team to a second win on the day. Saint Benedict (9-3) scored three runs in the first inning thanks to a leadoff double from Deming, a Hood error and RBI singles from Claire Boatman and Madison Mikolich. The team was scoreless for the next three innings, and Hood tied the game in the top of the fifth on three hits – including a two-run single – and a CSB error.

The game didn't stay tied long, however, as Mikolich sent in a run with an RBI single, Kennedy Kehr reached on a fielder's choice and Swoboda reached on an error, and all three came around to score on a three-run triple by Deming. Saint Benedict added two more runs for good measure in the sixth thanks to a two-run single from Swanson.

Deming finished the game 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and three RBIs. Boatman had a pair of hits, Mikolich had two hits and two RBIs and Swoboda added two hits. Grace Gilmore threw the first 3.1 innings on the mound and gave up just two hits with two strikeouts. Ally Hjort came in in the fourth and earned the win after giving up three runs on five hits with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work, and Alex Smith struck out one in the final inning.

CSB wraps up its spring break trip with two last games Saturday, March 9. The team takes on Ohio Northern at 10 a.m. EDT and Penn State Behrend at noon EDT in Titusville, Fla.
