Volleyball Splits at Home Tri-Match

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 27, 2014 – The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team split a pair of matches at Saturday's tri-match at the Hogan Sports Center. The Chargers fell to Emmanuel 3-1 and defeated Brandeis 3-0. Emmanuel swept Brandeis 3-0 in the middle match of the afternoon.

With the two wins, Emmanuel improves to 12-8, while Colby-Sawyer goes to 12-5 and Brandeis drops to 5-9.  

Emmanuel 3, Colby-Sawyer 1 – 29-27, 26-24, 12-25, 25-11

Sophomore Cassie Chruscielski (Duluth, Minn.) led the Saints with a double-double of 13 kills and 14 digs. She added four aces. Sophomore Kaitlyn Atkinson (Brookline, N.H.) also reached double figure kills with 10. Junior Shannon Dudley (Morro Bay, Calif.) turned in a 20-20 performance with 29 assists and a match best 23 digs.

Colby-Sawyer was led by a 14-kill, 19-dig performance from senior Jackie Keating (Marshfield, Mass.). Sophomore Gabrielle Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) added 13 kills and 21 digs. Senior Stephanie Vecchio (Shelter Island, N.Y.) was the third Charger to reach double digit kills with 10. Junior setter Laura Smolinski (Hebron, Conn.) had 34 assists, 15 digs and four aces.

Emmanuel 3, Brandeis 0 – 25-22, 25-17, 25-23

The Saints picked up their second victory of the day after defeating Brandeis, 3-0. Junior Brittany Tutalo (Johnston, R.I.) and Kaitlyn Atkinson had seven kills apiece to lead Emmanuel. Shannon Dudley had another solid match with 17 assists and a team-high 12 digs.

Brandeis was led by a match-high 10 kills from sophomore Jessica Kaufman (Tucson, Ariz.). Senior libero Elsie Bernaiche (Plantsville, Conn.) collected a match best 21 digs. Freshman setter Julie Kim (Fullerton, Calif.) had a match-high 21 assists and added eight digs and four aces.

Colby-Sawyer 3, Brandeis 0 – 25-17, 25-21, 25-12

The Chargers received a balance attack by the front line to sweep the Judges. Vecchio led all players with nine kills, while Rodriguez added eight kills. Sophomore Leah Drolet (Riverside, R.I.) hit .375 with four kills and added three blocks. Freshman Lexi Strong (Somersworth, N.H.) collected 10 digs.

Seniors Liz Hood (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Carly Gutner-Davis (Del Mar, Calif.) each had six kills to lead Brandeis. Julie Kim just missed a double-double with 20 assists and nine digs. Elsie Bernaiche had 15 digs.
