RIVERSIDE, R.I. - September 15, 2018 - The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team defeated reigning Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) champion Johnson & Wales, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon.
The Chargers improve to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Wildcats drop to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the GNAC.
Colby-Sawyer got the match off to a hot start by sweeping all three doubles matches.
Yashu Yang and
Anna Kopituk earned an 8-3 win at No. 1, while
Alexa Conlin and
Hilary Boucher won 8-5 at No. 3. In the closest doubles contest,
Maddy Gemerek and
Aislinn O'Connor edge Drew Bobey and Claire Parry 9-8 (7-1) to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead.
The Chargers took care of business by winning five of the six singles matches. Yang breezed by Parry at the top flight 6-1, 6-0.
Gemerek needed a tie-breaker to win the first set, but then took the second 6-1 at No. 2.
O'Connor earned a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at the third flight. With the win, O'Connor moved into a tie for 7th on the all-time wins list with
Claire Toffey '13.
Kopituk also won in straight sets at No. 4 6-3, 6-2. Boucher did not drop a game en route to her victory at the sixth flight.
