BOSTON, Mass. – The Emmanuel College Women's Soccer Team used a goal by senior Lindsey Garvey (Warwick, R.I.) in the 81st minute to top the Sharks of Simmons College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon. The Colleges of the Fenway (COF) rivalry was hosted by Simmons and played on the turf at the Winsor School.
The win boosted the Saints to 4-5-2 on the season and 2-0-1 in GNAC action. Simmons, who was picked third, just ahead of Emmanuel in the GNAC pre-season poll, dropped to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the league with the loss. The Fenway neighbors were evenly matched, each with 12 saves and a 30-25 Simmons' shot advantage.
The Saints would score first with a goal in the 25th minute. Rookie Maggie Carey (Swampscott, Mass.) netted her first collegiate goal on a cross from the left-side by classmate Courtney Freadman (Richmond, Mass.). Carey beat Sharks' keeper Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) on the low right side. Earlier in the half, Hayes made a huge stop on a Garvey on a point blank shot.
With 15 minutes remaining, Hayes came out of the net to the 25-yard line to force Garvey to shoot wide. With less two minutes to play in the half, Simmons senior Kristyn Heuslein (Manchester, N.H.) hit the crossbar on a free kick and the Saints were able to clear the zone and enter halftime up 1-0. Despite the Sharks out-shooting the Saints, 16-12, in the opening frame, Emmanuel still took a one-goal edge into the break.
Ten minutes into the second half, Heuslein attempted her second free kick and this time, floated the ball over the head of Saints goalkeeper Abaigeal Thivierge to knot the score at 1-1. The Sharks kept up the pressure with shots by Desh Perera (Reading, Mass.), Ali Berkman (Natick, Mass.) and Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.), but the Saints' defense denied a score.
Garvey's heroics came with 10 minutes remaining in the game, when she broke through the Sharks' defense to score on a pass from Darcey Sullivan (Dalton, Mass.). The Sharks posted four more shots in the closing minutes, but Garvey's game-winner was all that was needed in the 2-1 victory.
Since women's soccer began at Emmanuel in 1997, the 17-year series between the Saints and the Sharks now stands at 13-8 in favor of Simmons.
The Saints will be back in action this Tuesday (10/2), when they travel to Lasell College for a 4:00 PM start with the Lasers. The Sharks return to GNAC action on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at Norwich University at 7:00 PM.
