Griffin's Shutout Earns Chargers a Split with Norwich

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 14, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with Norwich University on Sunday afternoon. Colby-Sawyer won game one 2-0, while Norwich took game two by a 12-0 score.  

Colby-Sawyer goes to 5-19 overall and 3-7 in the GNAC. The Chargers are slated to host Saint Michael's on Wednesday. Norwich goes to 5-15 overall and 3-7 in conference action. The Cadets travel to Plattsburgh State on Tuesday.

GAME ONE – Colby-Sawyer 2, Norwich 0

First-year pitcher Derek Griffin (Lebanon, N.H.) shut down the Norwich hitters as he tossed a complete game 3-hitter with seven strikeouts to earn the win.

Both of the Chargers' runs came in the fifth inning. Tim Unczur (Danvers, Mass.) and Brendan Barrett (Nashua, N.H.) had RBI singles in the frame.

Norwich pitcher Tanner Raymond (Southbury, Conn.) took the loss in a complete game. He surrendered the two runs on five hits.

GAME TWO – Norwich 12, Colby-Sawyer 0

The Cadets erupted for eight runs in the top of the third benefiting from four walks and four hits. Senior Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) had the big hit in the inning, driving in a pair with a double to left field.

Norwich added a run in the fourth, two in the sixth, and another in the seventh to account for the 12-0 score.

Senior Jake Ryan (Arlington, Mass.) picked up his second win of the season for the Cadets after six shutout innings. He fanned five and gave up five hits. Junior CJ Davis (South Berwick, Maine) pitched a perfect seventh inning to secure the win.

Lynch finished the day with 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Junior Brady Doherty (Sandwich, Mass.) was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run.

Barrett had two hits for the Chargers.

Sophomore Noah Yeingst (Middleboro, Mass.) lasted 2.1 innings to take the loss.
