Women's Lacrosse Soars to 13-7 Win over Albertus Magnus

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 6, 2019 – Colby-Sawyer sophomore Briana Couture (South Hadley, Mass.) scored five goals to lead the women's lacrosse team to a 13-7 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over Albertus Magnus on Saturday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 8-3 overall and 6-2 in the conference standings. The Chargers will conclude a three-game homestand on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. GNAC contest against Anna Maria. Albertus Magnus has its 3-game win streak snapped to fall to 4-7 overall and 2-5 in the GNAC. The Falcons will play at New England College on Monday at 5 p.m.

Couture led all players with five goals and she added six ground balls. Sophomore Sarah Morin (Pelham, N.H.) added three goals, while senior Brittany Ireland (Amherst, N.H.) finished with three goals and an assist. Sophomore Madison Johansson (Stratham, N.H.) picked up a game-high seven ground balls to go with three caused turnovers. Senior Sierra Schuster (Hopkinton, N.H.) scored once and collected a three assists. She moved into seventh place on the all-time points list with 161.

Albertus Magnus was led by junior Kaitlyn Ellsworth (Tolland, Conn.). She had three goals and an assist. Junior Kaitlin D'Agostino (Hamden, Conn.) and first-year Madison Neilander (Wallingford, Conn.) added two goals apiece. Neilander also contributed three caused turnovers, three ground balls and five draw controls.

Colby-Sawyer junior goalie Kailyn Lapham (Medway, Mass.) earned the win and made 10 saves to move into seventh all-time with 301. Albertus Magnus senior goalie (Oakville, Conn.) kept the Falcons close with an impressive 18 saves.

The visitors scored the first two goals of the contest to lead 2-0 after six minutes. The Chargers answered with goals by Morin and Couture to tie the game at 2-2 with 19:29 left. Albertus Magnus quickly regained the advantage, 34 seconds later, with Ellsworth's second goal of the half.

The Chargers regrouped and took control of the game in the final 15 minutes of the first frame. Couture scored three times, during a 6-0 run for the Chargers, as the home team took an 8-3 lead. Neilander got a goal back for the Falcons, but Colby-Sawyer would take an 8-4 lead into the halftime break.

Schuster began the scoring in the second half and was followed by an Allison Piracini (Tewksbury, Mass.) goal to stake the Chargers to a 10-4 lead. Midway through the half, Albertus Magnus found the back of the net off the stick of D'Agostino, but the Chargers outscored the Falcons 3-2 down the stretch to secure the 13-7 victory.
