Women's Basketball Opens Season with 74-47 Win over SUNY Delhi

NEW LONDON, N.H. – November 10, 2018 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's basketball team began the 2018-19 season with a 74-47 victory over SUNY Delhi at the Hogan Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer goes to 1-0 and will travel to Brunswick, Maine next weekend for games against Colby and Bowdoin. The Broncos go to 0-1 and will play its home opener on Monday against Morrisville State with a tip scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Chargers received double-doubles from juniors Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) and Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine). Hamilton finished with 15 points and 11 assists, while Sugars contributed game-highs of 18 points and 16 rebounds. Junior Kristen Donaghey (Franklin, Mass.) reached double figures with 12 points, while sophomore Joslin Wainwright (Plainfield, N.H.) rounded out the leading scorers with 10.

SUNY Delhi was led by sophomore Camryn McDonald (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) who recorded a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. She added a game best six blocks. Junior Samiaya Salley (Highland Falls, N.Y.) posted 13 points and three steals. Junior Diana Echols (Ellenville, N.Y.) led the Broncos with 11 rebounds.

The first 7:32 of the contest saw just eight points on the board as each team got into the flow of a new season. The Chargers led 6-2 at that point, when the offense erupted for 13 points over the final two minutes to take a 19-4 lead after the first quarter. Hamilton had eight points in the frame.

The Chargers increased its advantage in the second quarter by knocking down three three-pointers. Colby-Sawyer led 36-17 at the half.  

Colby-Sawyer shot 50 percent in the third quarter and scored all 20 of its points in the paint to take a 56-25 advantage after 30 minutes. Sugars and Wainwright combined for 14 points.

SUNY Delhi outscored the Chargers, 22-18, in the fourth quarter on 41.2 percent shooting from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. McDonald poured in 11 points for the Broncos. Sophomore Riley Corrigan (Winooski, Vt.) and senior Abbie Sansoucy (Douglas, Mass.) each scored six for the Chargers.
