March 12, 2015

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Tied 14-14 in the final minutes of regulation, Simmons' Kasey Fries scored the game-winner with 2:04 to play as the Smith College lacrosse team (2-3) dropped a heartbreaking 15-14 contest to Simmons College Thursday evening. Senior Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) set career-highs in points (8) and assists (4) while first-year Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) tallied five goals to lead the Pioneers.

Trailing by 13-12 with 16:34 to play, the Pioneers strung together back-to-back goals to head into the final 14:38 with a 14-13 lead.

Junior Rachel Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable)'s 15th goal of the season off the draw control tied the contest, 13-13, at the 16:11 mark. A minute and a half later, Estes found Silveria, who fired it past the Sharks' keeper with 14:38 to play.

The score remained that way until eight and a half minutes later when Simmons' Stephanie Oliveri connected with Greer Gilbert for the equalizer.

The Sharks capitalized on their 15th free position attempt of the evening to take a 15-14 lead with 2:04 to play. Silveria snagged the ensuing draw control and found Hamilton in front of the cage but Hamilton's attempt clanged off the post and the Sharks were able to force a turnover on the rebound to secure the win.

Smith's first-year goalkeeper Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) made 15 saves, including seven on free position attempts in the loss.

Silveria tallied four goals, an assist and snagged seven draw controls. Senior Petru Bester (Deep River, Conn./Valley Regional) scored a goal and added a helper, while senior Angela Schondek (Raynham, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) dished out her first career assist. Estes and senior Bethany Claps (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) each caused two turnovers, while Claps and Price each scooped three groundballs.

Smith is scheduled to play the next five games on the road, with Salve Regina up first on March 15 at 1 p.m.
