Strong First Half Lifts Women's Lacrosse Past Norwich, 17-10

NEW LONDON, N.H. – March 20, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's lacrosse team scored nine times in the first half and went on for a 17-10 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over Norwich on Wednesday afternoon at the Sally Shaw Veitch Turf Field.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the GNAC. The Chargers travel to Rivier on Saturday with a 1 p.m. start. Norwich, which was picked seventh in the GNAC preseason poll, is led by 2015 Colby-Sawyer graduate Heather Faasse. She was a member of the women's soccer and track & field teams. The Cadets fall to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the conference. Norwich will host GNAC preseason favorite Johnson & Wales on Saturday at noon.

Senior Brittany Ireland (Amherst, N.H.) led all players with seven points on five goals and two assists. With her two assists, Ireland moves into 10th on the all-time list with 38. Senior Sierra Schuster (Hopkinton, N.H.) scored four times, while sophomore Briana Couture (South Hadley, Mass.) added three goals and two assists. First-year Caroline Tompkins (Marblehead, Mass.) picked up a game-high five ground balls, caused three turnovers and scored a goal.

Norwich received two goals from sophomore Missy Preul (Scottsdale, Ariz.), junior Mary-Kait Mace (Canton, N.Y.), sophomore Emily Schromm (North Attleboro, Mass.) and first-year Kate Winstanley (Lansdale, Pa.). First-year Sara Marcotte (Enfield, Conn.) registered a game-best four caused turnovers. First-year Brynn Mendes (Centerville, Mass.) contributed five draw controls, three caused turnovers, a goal and an assist.

Colby-Sawyer junior goalie Kailyn Lapham (Medway, Mass.) earned the win in 43 minutes of action. She made eight saves. First-year Maddie Langdon (The Woodlands, Texas) worked the final 17 minutes and made three saves. Junior Lawson Hayes (Moorestown, N.J.) made five saves for Norwich.

Schuster scored the game's first two goals in less than five minutes to stake the Chargers to a 2-0 lead. After a Winstanley goal for Norwich, Colby-Sawyer scored seven-straight to take a 9-1 lead. The Cadets notched a goal with 1.8 seconds showing on the clock, but trailed 9-2 at the half.

Each team scored eight times in the second half. Colby-Sawyer went in front 16-6 with less than six minutes to play, but the Cadets fought back with four consecutive goals to make the score 16-10. With 4:26 to play. The Chargers were able to stop the run and hold possession for most of the remaining time and added a late goal to win 17-10.
