WINTHROP, Mass. – Nearly 100 student-athletes, coaches, and administrators from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) gathered this past Sunday, September 24th to volunteer their time at the 14th Annual Brian J. Honan 5K Run/Walk in Allston, Mass.

Named in honor of the former Boston city councilor who passed away in 2002, the Brian J. Honan 5K is a commemorative road race honoring Honan's unwavering dedication to his community.

The GNAC has maintained a rich tradition of participating in community volunteer efforts year-round as part of its commitment to the values of sportsmanship, integrity, and community and is proud to return year after year to help give back.

Carrying on the tradition, seven teams from across the conference joined together to assist with event registration, setting up water stations along the race route, and handling the distribution of medals at the finish line of the 2017 Brian Honan 5K, among other responsibilities along Brighton Avenue to continue Honan's commitment to serving others. A special thanks goes out to the student-athletes and coaches from Emmanuel men's and women's cross country, Lasell women's volleyball, Mount Ida women's basketball, Mount Ida men's lacrosse, Simmons women's basketball and Suffolk men's ice hockey for their volunteer efforts.

Honan, before passing away at the age of 39 due to complications following cancer surgery, devoted his life to public service as a teacher, prosecutor and city councilor. In his memory, the Brian J. Honan Charitable Fund was established to help support and foster programs that support education, recreation, housing and healthcare.
